When new complexer systems evolve, it becomes more and more unlikely that the organism will revert to the ancestral system, because of the new (inter)dependencies between the individual components.<br /><br />The authors of a recent Nature paper on the link between viviparity (there it is again!) and gene-dependent sex determination also skim the subject of Dollo for a bit. Using MCMC they show that the probability of reversal is really, really low.
